Mariajose (MJ)'s Bio

I’m a seasoned marketer with 15 years of experience in Product & Digital Marketing, for B2B and B2C companies: from FMCG to SaaS, and from South America, to the US, and Europe.

As Kahoot’s Marketing Automation Manager, I enable different teams to make the most of Iterable, while optimizing our automated journeys to successfully accompany our users throughout their lifecycle.

Fun Facts

I’m learning to play the Ukulele, so far I mostly know short songs in Sanskrit, that are typically used after or before a meditation.
I’m studying to become a Yoga Teacher.
I’m vegan, but the one thing I always kill are plants. I just don’t have a green thumb.

Interview

When and how did you get your start in marketing?

I started working in Marketing during my last year of college. I started an internship at Empresas Polar, a top FMCG company in Venezuela. I competed with four interns for a full-time position. For a year, I worked on a project, with a tutor, and presented it to the Marketing department. And I earned the full time position.

What’s a mistake you’ve made at work, and how did you deal with it or what did you learn from it?

As someone working on automation, I’ve made some mistakes with links on emails, branches on a workflow, etc. We’re human, and to err is part of our nature. Whenever I make a mistake, I recognize it, I immediately get into troubleshooting mode, and after it’s fixed I brainstorm ideas on processes that can help with reducing mistakes. A few things I’ve implemented:

  • Checklists for all kinds of things, to avoid having to rely solely on memory
  • Recruiting team members for testing
  • Taking a break, and coming back with fresher eyes at a later time, when possible to review my work
  • And the hardest, to not judge myself harshly, learn from it, and move on.

What tips, tricks, or pieces of advice would give a new Iterable user?

Use the Iterable chat! Too many times I’ve tried to figure it out by myself for way too long. The support team is AMAZING.

Even if you’re seasoned, it doesn’t hurt to go through the Iterable Academy, and check the basic track when you’re starting. Each Marketing Automation Tool brings something different, and it’s important you understand how Iterable works, vs. what you’ve worked with before.

What does customer experience mean to you and how does Iterable play a role?

To me, customer experience is about accompanying the customer throughout their time with you and being helpful while doing so. Yes, you need to make a profit, but the best path is by guiding and showing how you can serve your customers. Iterable has a lot of what you need to make that possible.

As a consumer, what brings you joy from a brand’s outreach/communication?

When it’s relevant, meaning I’m interested in the content, and it’s sent at the right time. That alone is powerful, and it takes work to accomplish it.

Besides Iterable, what are the other tools in your marketing toolkit that you can’t live without?

  • An email builder, with your styles and everything pre-built, so that you can quickly create emails without having to code them. I’m using BeePro at the moment.
  • A code reader of your preference.
  • A task manager integrated with my calendar, for time blocking. I currently use Asana with Clockwise.
  • A tool for quick screen recording & video sharing. I use Loom! This is great for reporting bugs, training people, etc.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

Listen to your gut, and go with it.

What’s one thing that can instantly make your day better?

Talking away outside, preferably around nature. It puts everything in perspective.
